- Nietzsche appelle lui-même la Généalogie de la Morale « une œuvre de polémique » et la désigne comme le complément nécessaire à Par-delà le Bien et le Mal. Le titre allemand Zur Genealogie der Moral devrait être rendu plus exactement — et plus lourdement — par Contributions à la Généalogie, etc. L’ouvrage entier, ainsi que l’écrit l’auteur à M. Georges Brandes, fut « conçu, exécuté et préparé pour l’impression entre le 10 et le 30 juin 1887 » à Sils Maria. Interrompu dans son travail par un nouvel accès de son mal, Nietzsche ne put en rédiger définitivement les derniers paragraphes et achever la correction des épreuves qu’en octobre de la même année. La publication eut lieu en novembre 1887, chez l’éditeur C. G. Naumann à Leipzig.
